By  way of mercerizing the fabric attains better gloss, more strength and become more hygroscopic. When mercerized, the fabric becomes hydrated and will be similar to original cellulose. The process of mercerization consists of treating the cotton fabric with concentrated solution of caustic soda at a temperature of 17 – 18 degrees C. When treated with caustic alkali, the cellulosic fibers undergo chemical as well as physico-chemical changes and also structural changes. The chemical change leads to formation of alkali cellulose, physical change leads to rapid swelling of the fibers and structural changes lead to change in the arrangement of units in the cellulose molecule. There will be considerable swelling of the fibers and these changes are irreversible.
